broken :: STORY conference

the following is a music video i developed for STORY via the great ben arment. it was shown 10/28/09 as an environment piece played behind the band as they sang “broken” by lifehouse, live.

after the initially listen of the song i was inspired to shoot a true to life look at pain and passion. without a real budget for production i went with a real life portrait style with minimal production led lighting. shot on tricked out a 7D

special thanks goes out to fotogs jamie claytonlogan burkhart & long time friend, drew workman, for all their help and talents on the shoot.

    BRO,
im blown away on how good that was. to see how you took people who are scraping their way through life and make it into something so beautiful truthfully i am impressed. seeing the people we saw that night and seeing how you showed their stories is amazing. you are very gifted and once again im blessed to know you

It was one of the most powerful pieces in the conference. Such stunning cinematography. Thanks so much TK!

Beautiful video! Loved every second of it.

Can you talk more about the “tricked out 7D”? I’ve been looking at getting a 7D, largely due to the insane looking cinematography like the stuff in your video.

What did you do the 7D setup? What kind of lens(s) were you using?

    Thanks.

    Cameron,
    thanks for the kind words.

I was shooting on a 7d with Canon 16-35mm super wide and a 85mm 1.8f lens. The housing and follow focus is what takes a DSRL camera to the next video level. I got mine at http://www.redrockmicro.com
I was also using a “streak filter” in some shots. this gives that streaking light flares. Thanks for asking and watching man.

I love that we somehow know the same people… though, I truth be told, just met Ben and Scott last week.

I need to get some TK time, sometime soon. Keep creating.

Really great video. I have a 7D and have been wanting to shoot some nigh time footage like this. What tricks/advice can you offer?

Also, how do you approach random people on the street like that and get them to let you film them?

the best thing about shooting DSLR video is the ability to capture low amounts of light.

the two most important things to me when shooting at night is my lens and my fill light.
LENS :: a MUST have is prime lens with large F stop. I have a 85mm f1.8 that I love to use. There are some 1.4 out there and even 1.2 that can grab some really killer light. The only thing to keep in mind is the lower the F stop # number the shorter the depth of field. (wide open my 85mm has a depth of field of about and inch. CRAZY, i know.)

LIGHTING :: I LOVE MY LITEPANNEL. I have a “lightpannel micro pro” LED dimmable light that does an amazing job as a soft fill light. Its run by 6 AA batteries and puts off minimal heat. Its a must have for mobile shooting.

The worst thing you can do is push your ISO (also called ASA when shooting video) really high. I try to stay under 1500 and use soft, low fill light. Just be careful to only use a small amount of fill so that you don’t lose your background texture.

    Thanks for reading Ryan.
