Style Series | ft. Aliegh Shields

Last week I became inspired to start a video series that would

challenge me artistically

give me a reason to try different styles (directing, shooting, editing, coloring, fashion…)

become a great opportunity for collaboration (crew, actors, makeup/hair/fashion designers…)

Each short film will feature an actor, musician, model or character that exudes a certain style I think needs to be seen. Every vid will be around 1 to 2 min and will have different looks, framing, frame rates, colors and editing styles…

I wanted to start this series off with some sass and thats what I got with Aliegh. A rinky dink fair was in town and we concluded that a “grease” meets “2000’s” would be quite fitting for both Aliegh and the setting. She did a great job.

I also wanted to shoot at 30 frames per second then, in post, convert that to 24 fps using cinema tools. What this does is extend the natural motion of life, giving a dream like touch without the look of slow motion. For the edit, I wanted to use the edge of Aliegh’s look and compliment it with rough camera movements and a good dose of jump cuts. Color: one thing you can notice in “saturated” films (like Transformers) is that the orange skin tone is typically complimented with a teal color somewhere in the shot. Without over-saturating like the movie noted, I used some similar combinations. Note: After the upload to vimeo I notice that a good amount color was lost… unhappy.

Overall, I think we turned out a great piece. Couldn’t have done it without all the talented people below. Oh, and watch out for Aliegh. Her EP is coming soon and I don’t think anyones ready.

main youtube version

Benjah, a christian artist, wrote this song about the perplexities of modern dating. After getting a lyric breakdown (cuz I don’t speak Rasta), I wrote the treatment around Dillavou being Benjah’s subconscious. Always in his ear, being the voice of reason in his life yet his presence is unseen by Benjah. The story line follows the path of his conviction.

The look I was shooting for was raw, un-american feel. We wanted the video to have a tropic look without the overdone beach scene. For the tiny budget I think it turned out pretty well.

Huge thanks to all those who helped.

One year ago today my wife and I arrived in Nashville. Here’s the short of it.

In the past 12 months I have had the blessing of working across the US, shot in Ethiopia, developed content for STORY, shot a concert, directed 5 music vids, started my brand igoby.tk, wrote some great future commercials (really pumped about these), lived a week on the 3EB tour bus with SJ, personally pitched a concept of mine to University of Kentucky’s athletic director & coach Cal. They flipped for it, which got me a private meeting with Worldwide Wes, Gee Roberson and Drake. All packed into a small greenroom under Rupp Arena, with Wes standing, Drake, Gee and I sharing seats on a table, I shared with them my idea with the aid of keynote, a remote and speakers (f.y.i. within the pitch is a song i wrote and rapped… (kinda funny)). Every pitch went amazing… In fact, Wes interrupted me only to ask “are you an agent?… cuz you need to be.” Needless to say I was flattered. Two months later, that project inevitably fell through due to… reasons I probably shouldn’t post because of the minion spys watching… I wish I were kidding.

More recently, I signed with revolution pictures as a new director. Such a great group of people and I’m really excited about what is on the horizon with them. Lastly, as of February, I have moved in with 821 Entertainment. Eric has generously given me an office to do…, whatever it is I do, out of (images coming soon). Now, I don’t work for 821, maybe someday. But for now, I am focusing on directing and staying creative with music vids and commercial spots.

Its been a good year. All glory to God.

This week I am color grading a recent shoot in Orlando with a reggae artist while writing a treatment for my next vid with Ben Rector.

I also want to announce that I am starting a test shot series here on my blog. Im going to post weekly experimental short videos that will be a journy into some different styles of film and aesthetics. Really excited about this. I am going to need some models, both male and female… hint hint.

“WHO IS WORLD WIDE WES?”….
